I was late on the advice giving but as a native ny’er I feel inclined to put in my two cents. Forget Magnolia Bakery, for cupcakes you want to go to CRUMBS! 73rd (or 74th I forget but you can’t miss it) and Amsterdamn right off the 72nd street stop. Lower East Side for clothes, soho is packed to the gils with tourists and hard to navigate on weekends, chain stores have been moving in and taking over but A.P.C, Anna Sui etc.. still have their flag ships there. LES around delancy is good for small boutiques with stuff you won’t find at H&M. Some general advice, the subway on the weekends is tricky, make sure you pay attention to the signs! All construction is done on the weekends and trains that are normally local run express (or vice versa) one our favorite past times is watching tourists get that look of horror on their face when they realize they’ve just flown past their stop, but we are generally nice people and will be more than helpful if you ask. For bars, I recomend Crocodile lounge on 14th st between 3rd and 2nd you get a free pizza with every (alcoholic) drink, and the pizza is excellent. If you’re up town, Dive 75 (75th st between amsterdam and columbus) is an awesome bar for an afternoon drink and a game of scrabble (they’ve got tons of board games and free candy!) one of my favorite locals. Check out curry row for good indian (6th st) china town for cheap dumplings and pastries and harlem for awesome soul food. If you’re hanging out in the East Village or West Village it’s hard to find a bad place to eat or drink, and bleeker street is always good for food and ice cream (check out Cones! best home made ice cream in the city!) And to end my rant, check out the Met, Moma, The Frick, Guggenheim and Neue Galerie always worth the time. The End
