Cuba n’est pas ce qu’il y a de plus confortable en terme de tourisme. Il ne faut pas s’attendre à des chambres rénovées ou aux transports les plus modernes.

Et curieusement, c’est ça aussi qui fait son charme. L’ambiance rétro est partout.

C’est aussi une destination qui revient assez cher ( il y a deux monnaies qui circulent, et le dollar CUC obligatoirement utilisé par les étrangers vaux environ 25 fois plus que le pesos local ).

Malgré ces deux inconvénients , Cuba reste une destination merveilleuse.

Suffisamment bien préparé et informé, ce séjour peut devenir le meilleur de votre vie ( ça a été le cas pour moi ! ).

Pour la restauration et l’hébergement, on peut distinguer deux types d’établissements:

– Gérés par l’état: les restaurants, magasins et hôtels.

– Gérées par des particuliers: les « Casa particular », et les « Paladar ».

Certaines choses ont considérablement évoluées depuis peu.

En difficulté financière, le gouvernement a licencié un nombre considérable de ses fonctionnaires, les incitant ainsi à ouvrir leur propres commerces.

Les propriétaires de Casa Particular ( chambres d’hôtes ) ont la permission d’héberger plus d’étrangers qu’avant, et des restaurants privés ( les « Paladar » ) commencent à voir le jour. Ils se donnent d’ailleurs souvent beaucoup de mal et soignent la présentation dans les moindre détails. Mais comme cela reste toujours difficile de se procurer de tout, beaucoup de produits viennent du marché noir, qui est assez répandu à Cuba.

Voici une petite liste d’adresses à La Havane:

♥ Mon Hôtel : Hôtel Conde de Villanueva . Je l’ai choisi pour son esprit plus intimistes que les autres hôtels, pour les paons qui se baladent librement dans la cour, pour son excellente cave à cigares, et pour son emplacement idéal dans une jolie rue de La Habana Vieja. La Plaza Vieja est à deux pas !

♥ Club Tropicana : Tout comme les rues de la Havane, ce cabaret semble avoir été figé dans le temps. C’est le seul établissement du genre à avoir survécu aux réformes de la fin des années 50.

Les costumes sont magnifiques et les danseurs très professionnels. Les billets sont assez chers, mais après avoir vu le spectacle, j’ai trouvé que ça valait vraiment le coup !

♥ Promenade dans la Habana Vieja. Les vieux bâtiments souvent très dégradés témoignent d’un pays à l’économie qui s’épuise ( beaucoup ont été sauvés grâce aux dons fait par l’Unesco ), ils dégagent néanmoins une indéniable beauté et un côté mystérieux.

♥ Tour en voiture: également à ne pas manquer, un tour dans l’une de ces vieilles voitures américaines. Discuter avec le chauffeur qui vous expliquera  » qu’il n’y a plus grand-chose d’américain dans la voiture… juste la carcasse » fait aussi parti du charme de la balade. Les plus beaux spécimen sont garés au Parque Central et devant le Capitolio.

♥ Restaurant: Paladar Los Mercaderes. Un établissement privé qui se donne du mal au point de parsemer le sol de pétales de roses. Très bonne cuisine caribéenne.

♥ Casa Particular: Casa David & Lidia Diaz. Une casa particular qui compte à présent 3 maisons. L’endroit est très connu des français. L’accueil est charmant, et la cuisine familiale très dépaysante.

♥ Café El Escorial, sur la plaza Vieja.

♥  Les vieilles pharmacies. Avec leurs boiseries et leurs multitudes de pots en porcelaine, c’est magnifique à voir !

♥ Casa de la Musica: l’endroit est souvent conseillé, mais j’ai eu une assez mauvaise expérience. Le groupe qui passait sur scène était excellent, mais le son relayé dans les haut-parleurs était abominable ! Peux être aurez vous la chance de ne pas tomber sur le même technicien du son que moi ce soir là…

Cuba isn’t the most comfortable and easy destination for tourism. Brand new hotel rooms or modern transportation cannot be part of your expectations.

But it’s also the reason why it’s so charming. The vintage atmosphere is everywhere.

It’s not the cheapest either. There are currently two different currencies in the country, and the dollar CUC that foreign people have to use is about 25 more expensive than the local pesos.

Despite these two points, Cuba remains a wonderful place to visit. If you are full informed and prepared, this trip can be the best of your life ( it definitely was one of the best for me ! )

For food and accommodations, there are two types of institutions:

– Managed by the state: restaurants, stores and hotels .

– Run by the locals: casa particular and Paladar.

Some things have significantly evolved recently.

Because of financial difficulties, the government has dismissed many of its workers, thereby encouraged to open their own business.

The Casa Particular ( sorts of B&B ) owners are allowed to receive more people than before, and private restaurant ( Paladar ) have just opened. As these places are new, they try hard to make everything look beautiful in every details. But as it’s still quite difficult to get all the products they need, a lot of things comes from the black market, which is quite common in Cuba.

Here is a list of my favorite addresses and things to do in La Habana:

♥ My hotel: Hôtel Conde de Villanueva. I chose this one because it seemed more intimate than other hotels, for the peacocks wandering in the yard, for the excellent Cigars store, and for the perfect location in La Habana Vieja. The pretty Plaza Vieja is very close.

♥ Club Tropicana: Just like the streets of La Habana, this cabaret seems to be still stuck in the 50’s. It’s the only place of this kind having survived the reforms.

The costumes are incredibly beautiful, and the dancers very professional. The tickets are quite expensive, but after seeing the show, I thought it was really worth it !

♥ A walk in La Habana Viera: The old buildings almost falling apart reflect the country’s economy problems ( many of them were restored with the help of UNESCO ), they still exude an undeniable beauty and mystery.

♥ A ride in one of these american cars: this is Something that is also not to miss. Talking with the driver who will explain to you that  » there’s nothing american left … only the coachwork  » is also part of the charm of the tour. The finest specimen are parked at Parque Central and in front of the Capitolio

♥  Restaurant Paladar Los Mercaderes: Private, that try so hard they sprinkle rose petals on the floor. Excellent caribbean food.

♥ Casa Particular : Casa David & Lidia Diaz. There are now three houses in their business. The place is well known by the french. The welcome was very friendly, and the meals typically Cubans.

♥ Café El Escorial, on Plaza Vieja.

♥ Old Pharmacies. With the wood and porcelain pots, it’s beautiful to see !

♥ Casa de la musica: the place is often recommended, but I had a pretty bad experience. The band performing on stage was excellent, but the sound echoed in the speakers was terrible ! If you are lucky, you won’t get the same sound technician that I had on that night.
