In Osaka, a one day visit to Universal Studios.
I must admit, I’m much more sensible to the charm of Disney parks, but any amusement park located in Japan is worth the visit.
Japanese visitors are extremely disciplined, and just like everywhere in Japan, the food is delicious. The atmosphere, and people dressed in funny costumes is also what makes Japanese parks so special.
The place is not too big, which makes it easier to enjoy each lands. My favorites:
Hello Kitty Fashion Avenue ( what a surprise ! I would recommend my post about Sanrio Puroland if you like her too ), Jurassic Park, and The Wizzarding World of Harry Potter..
The park was crowded the day I went there, so purchasing an Express Pass was the best investment I could ever make ( the amount of tickets is limited, so it’s better to either arrive early or to book in advance ! ).
To compare with Universal Studios Orlando where I went almost 3 years ago, the Osaka park is quite different. Many things are a lot more focused on mascots such as The Muppets, Snoopy or Hello Kitty of course ( that are not represented in the US ), but the Simpsons for example are missing from the landscape ( which is sad in my opinion ).
What they have in common ? The extremely colorful everything puts you in a good mood the instant you pass the gates !

Here is a Disneyland interlude, with some photos from the « Swing into Spring » season that just started a few days ago at Disneyland Paris.
I know that the contrast is huge between the little communist island and the capitalist giant, but the event ending the 22th of June, I thought it was better not to wait to long.
I really loved the very springy floral decorations in Time Square, Main Street and Central plazza.
There was obviously a lot of effort put into it, and it was a pleasure to see.
And definitely something very Mary Poppins going on with the penguins, and the very lively parade featuring the Mary, Bert and chimney men characters in very colorful costumes.
With the movie Saving Mr Banks released a few months ago ( movie that I loved by the way ), it was a real treat for the eyes !
It was the first time I enjoyed the park with a perfect sunny atmosphere, and not even too crowded.
And with the trees in full blossoms in Fantasyland, Disneyland Paris was looking more beautiful than ever.

–

There’s only one Disney sea in the world, and it’s located in Tokyo. This is already one good reason to go if you visit Japan ( I also visited Tokyo Disneyland the year before )
Beyond that, the real reason is that the park is extremely successful.
As its name suggests, the theme is inspired by the ocean, around 7 different areas: Italy, Arabia, America …
You won’t get wet in any of these attractions, but you will get a lot of emotions for sure.
My two favorite worlds are the « Mermaid Lagoon » and the « Mysterious Island » inspired by Jules Vernes with an erupting volcano.
The park is full of a thousand things to see, there are so many details that I just couldn’t see everything. But I’ll try to catch up as soon as I get back to Japan !
Here are a few anecdotes and tips, if you ever want to visit this magical place !
–
♥ Japanese people adore the park. For this simple reason, the place is often completely crowded. Get you fast passes in the morning as soon as you can for the most popular attractions ( or you may leave empty handed or wait a really long time ). This way you won’t spend your entire day in a queue, and save a lot of time to do some other things.
–
♥ Japaneses love mascots. Therefore, a bear have been especially created for Tokyo Disney Sea. His name is Duffy and he wears a sailor suit. Entire stores in the park are dedicated to Duffy, selling thousands of products. I even saw groups of teenage girls dressed just like him.
–
♥ When you go to Tokyo Disney Land or Tokyo Disney Sea, you dress accordingly. Both children and adults wear funny accessories or are even dressed as Disney Characters.
Friends organize their outfits in advance to be dressed all the same the day they go to the park.
But be careful, it has to be exclusively Disney ! It contributes to the great atmosphere and fun of the place.
When I went innocently with a Totoro bag, I never imagined I would feel so out of place ! They probably thought I mistaken the place with the Ghibli Museum ^ ^
–
♥ Bring enough cash with you to buy souvenirs or snacks at the trailers. Unlike the stores and restaurants, they are the only ones who do not accept credit cards in the park.
–
♥ There are a lot of stores, and everything sold there is extremely well presented. From a biscuit box to a simple key chain, you want to buy any single thing.
I particulary like the store on Plaza Topolino, where you can find some cute kitchen accessories. I bought the most amazing Fantasia cup and Alice in Wonderland tea service.
–
♥ Do not hesitate to taste many things. Japan is one of the few countries where you can eat with your eyes closed, and where the food is not only cute but good.
You will find a lot of cute and tasty things in Tokyo Disney sea: The toy story martians with vanilla, chocolate and strawberry flavor, shell shaped ice cream, giant gyoza.
–
♥ The Fantasmic show is great. The lights and sound effect are really well done.
–
♥ I didn’t try all the attraction, but I was impressed by 20,000 Leages Under The Sea. On board of a submarine, you feel immersed in the depths of the ocean thanks to an ingenious system. I came out completely amazed.
The Toy Story Midway Mania attraction is the best ! Make sure to get your fast pass first thing when you arrive in the park in the morning. Otherwise you’ll have to wait for at least two hours.
–
♥ Want to blend into the population ? Get one of these popcorn buckets, like 90% of the Japanese visitors. Non stop snacking in perspective, as you can refill throughout the day. As surprising as it seems, these buckets are more important as it seems. There is one specific bucket for each season ( Halloween, Christmas … ). Like thousands other things in Japan, I suspect many people to collect them.
–
♥ It will be the only country where you can see this: tatami culture obliged, families are used to put a special carpet on the floor and settle there. For lunch, resting, or simply to wait before a show. I will probably never get used to it, but I must admit it can be really useful !
